Sensory Processing Disorder

This training workshop will discuss the concept of Sensory Processing and how important it is in a child’s typical development. Sensory Processing Disorder is a recognised condition which can have a very profound effect on a child’s ability to deal and manage with everyday sensory input which can result in consequential and significant changes in a child’s ability to learn, concentrate, interact with peers appropriately, as well as their overall behaviour and ability to participate to their full potential in school and in the home.

Some of the typically observed behaviours of children who have sensory processing difficulties are:

  • Constant fidgeting and ‘on the go’ in class
  • Lethargic and dreamy
  • Slow to start work and constantly missing cues
  • Poor coordination and balance
  • Difficulty organising self
  • Has difficulty paying attention

The training workshop will address the following areas:

  • What are our senses?
  • What is Sensory Processing and what is Sensory Processing Disorder?
  • Case studies of different sensory profiles; how to recognise them and what to do
  • Discussion of useful sensory resources for the school and classroom

Developmental Coordination Disorder/Dyspraxia

This diagnosis can have a profound impact on a child’s ability to access the curriculum, participate in functional tasks such as dressing, eating, handwriting etc… as well as having a negative effect on their self-esteem and confidence.
